What Makes Modern Headshots Modern?
There are many aspects to a headshot that makes it modern. Let’s start with lighting; lighting intrigues for modern headshots. Often there’s a little more highlight to shadow ratio. The background also comes into play. Many entrepreneurs, marketers, speakers, and artistic fields prefer a modern and artsy look.
However, the background choice for a contemporary portrait will vary depending on the goal. If the corporate headshot is for an executive, an out-of-focus office background is a good choice for a modern headshot. If it’s an entrepreneur or author, then a darker background where the subject pops is often the way to go.
The subject will often be cropped much closer or visa-versa than a traditional business portrait with our style of portraits. When done right, a stylish headshot will usually get a lot of attention on social media. A conventional business portrait typically is crop right around the bustline and slightly above the head.
Do People Have Both Modern and Traditional Business Portraits?
The short answer is yes. We have a financial adviser client who goes after two types of clients, old money and new money. As a result, they have modern headshots to appeal to new money and traditional portraits to appeal to old money. Part of the traditional headshot style is for men to be in a suit and tie, and the women to be in a suit with jewelry such as pearls. Which gives the portrait more of a traditional look. The men will often wear a sports jacket without a tie with a contemporary picture, and the women’s jewelry will be more modern.
As you can see, it does make sense to capture both contemporary and traditional headshots for some.
What’s Better, NJ Modern Headshots or Traditional Headshots
Like many things in life, which style headshot is better is subjective. Photography and branding isn’t a one sized fits all formula. As a result, we will discuss what style portrait, modern headshots, or traditional business portraits would be best for you and your brand. It all depends on what type of clients you are trying to attract, and we will design a portrait session for you to meet those needs.
